Creative Production Techniques I&II focus
on unique scenarios and non-mainstream techniques in recording
and production. Assignments include recording live to mono
analog tape (SONY Walkman, etc); instrument construction, using
scrap materials; composition and recording in the traditions
of various musical genres including reggae and blues.
Lectures include:
• Introduction To Analog Recording. Topics covered include
the history of analog recording, noteworthy events, dates and
people associated with analog recording. There will be a field
trip to Acme Recording Studios scheduled, where you will study
a vintage 24 Track tape recorder.
• Micing Techniques For Acoustic Instruments. Topics
include the various microphones and techniques employed in
analog recording. In-studio demonstrations will highlight the
lecture.
• Micing Techniques For Drums.
• Studio Etiquette.
• Mixing Techniques.
• “Guerilla” Recording Techniques.
• Building, Composing On and Recording Instruments Made
From Junk.
• An Overview Of World, Roots & American Musical
Genres. Why They Impact The Record Producer’s Ability
To Hear, Recognize and Produce Music. Include. Reggae, Blues,
Klezmer, etc.
• Recording Techniques of Noted Producers Including Enoch
Light, George Martin, Phil Spector, etc
• There will be guest lecturers from time to time including
the lead vocalist of The Spin Doctors, Chris Barron (Oct 4th).
There are no mid-terms or finals in Creative Production Techniques
I&II, however you will be asked to record and produce several
assignments each term, and you will be expected to attend every
class meeting. Grades will be based on the assignments and
attendance.
